Moving off Dynamics GP: Your Options Before Support Ends
This hub is for finance and IT leads who run Microsoft Dynamics GP on their own servers. Microsoft ends GP enhancements, tax updates and technical support on 31 December 2029, and security patches on 30 April 2031. The decision you face is when to leave GP, whether Business Central or another system should replace it, and how to move your data without disrupting the close.
Key points
- GP product enhancements, regulatory (tax) updates and technical support end on 31 December 2029; security patches, if needed, continue until 30 April 2031.
- New customers could no longer license GP subscriptions after 1 April 2026, so the product is in its final years.
- Business Central is Microsoft's recommended destination, and a built-in cloud migration tool moves GP 2015 and later data to Business Central online.
- The tool migrates setup, master data, open transactions, GL summary history and an optional historical snapshot; reports, add-ons and customizations need their own plan.
- Staying on GP until 2029 is reasonable if it is stable, but a mid-size move commonly needs a year or more of lead time once assessment and testing are included.
When does Dynamics GP support end, and what changes before then?
Microsoft's lifecycle page sets 31 December 2029 as the end of GP enhancements, tax updates and technical support, with security patches available until 30 April 2031. Older releases have earlier dates: GP 2016 left extended support in July 2026, and unpatched GP 2018 follows in January 2028. Our timeline explains each milestone, which version you are actually on, what risk each date adds for payroll, 1099 reporting and security, and how far back to start planning.

Is Business Central the right replacement for GP?
For most GP customers, yes: Business Central keeps Microsoft's accounting model, adds cloud access and twice-yearly updates, and has a direct migration path. The trade-offs are real, though. SmartLists give way to data analysis mode and Excel, Management Reporter statements are rebuilt as financial reports, and some GP add-ons have no Business Central version. Our comparison sets out where Business Central wins, where staying on GP wins, and when Dynamics 365 Finance or another vendor fits better.

How do you move GP data without surprises?
Microsoft's cloud migration tool moves GP setup, customers, vendors, items, open transactions and summary GL history, plus an optional historical snapshot of detailed transactions. It does not move undeposited receipts, paid portions of documents or GP unit of measure schedules, and it overwrites data in the target environment. Our checklist walks through prerequisites, data cleanup, segment-to-dimension mapping, replication, validation and cutover, so each step has an owner and a sign-off.

What does the wider Business Central project look like?
Data migration is one workstream inside a larger implementation. Discovery, solution design, configuration, testing, training and hypercare after go-live decide whether finance closes smoothly in the first month. If you have chosen Business Central, the implementation roadmap in our Business Central hub lists the deliverables, roles and go/no-go criteria for each phase, and shows where the GP migration steps fit. It also covers the budget lines and team roles finance and IT should agree before the first test migration.

Frequently asked questions
Will Dynamics GP stop working after 31 December 2029?
No. The software keeps running, but Microsoft stops product enhancements, tax and regulatory updates and technical support on that date. Security patches, if needed, continue until 30 April 2031. After that you run an unpatched system and carry the compliance and security risk yourself.
Can we move our GP history to Business Central?
Yes. Microsoft's cloud migration tool brings GL summary transactions for the historical years you choose, and an optional historical snapshot of GL, receivables, payables, sales, purchasing and inventory detail. Many companies also keep a read-only copy of GP for older years. Agree the cut-off with your auditors during planning.
Do we have to choose Business Central?
No. Business Central is Microsoft's recommended path and has a direct migration tool, but larger or more complex groups may fit Dynamics 365 Finance, and some companies choose another vendor. Compare options on fit, add-ons and five-year cost, not on the migration tool alone.
Does Microsoft's migration tool work for every GP customer?
It supports GP 2015 and later on SQL Server 2016 or later, and its Cloud Migration Setup guide for GP currently covers the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Older versions, other markets or a different target system need a custom migration.
How long does a move from GP to Business Central take?
It depends on the number of companies, add-ons, reports and years of history you migrate. As general guidance, allow 18 to 24 months from first assessment to the cutover date you want, so there is room for cleanup, at least one full test migration and user training before a period close.
